NACCHO received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support local health departments (LHDs) prevent birth defects and developmental disabilities. The Suffolk County (NY) Health Department's Interconception Care Collaboration Project connects postpartum health education with family planning health education. Interconception care helps families reach their childbearing objectives and avoid unintended pregnancies. It also provides counseling to achieve healthy birth intervals and optimum pregnancy outcomes. Prepared by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and NACCHO, the brief provides general information on preconception and interconception care and offers examples of federal, state, and local initiatives that promote preconception care and interconception care.
